New Rule Ramifications

SimpleMan's most recent post got me reminiscing a bit about Sean Jones and how good a player he was.  I looked up the above scoop & score against Tennessee on YouTube, and after watching it a couple of times, I had a scary thought.  I'm sure by now you've all heard about the new rule going into effect this year where if a player starts celebrating before crossing the goal line, it is considered a dead ball penalty and enforced from the spot where the celebration started, and the points are taken off the board.  Now Jones was not outlandish by any means, but he definitely starts prancing a bit at about the 5 yard line..........and based on the now infamous celebration penalty against AJ Green, we know that the refs are more sensitive to that issue now than they were back when Jones made this play.  Can you imagine the ramifications if a flag were to be thrown in this scenario?  With no time left on the clock, we would have gone into halftime with only our 6 point lead, and a totally deflated feeling.  And instead of coming out in the second half with no fire and no energy from the crowd, the Vols would have come back out fired up and ready to go.  The entire complexion of that game would have been changed.

Worse yet, imagine if this were happening at the end of a game on what would have been the winning score.  You know that at some point, it's going to happen, and the uproar is going to be something to behold. I just hope it's not the Dawgs that become Exhibit A on why this is a terrible rule.
