There's only a handful of dead periods per year, and other than that you are toiling away non-stop. This is why we are seeing so many guys headed to the NFL - job security isn't as great there, but at least you get a true offseason.

I have a more in-depth series I'm working on, but here are 3 things they should do to take some of the stress off of the coaches.

1. Allow recruiting staff to, you know, recruit.

As it is now, only the head coach and assistant coaches can actually go out and recruit. The rest of the recruiting staff can only do on campus activities - even scouting, they can only do video scouting, they are not allowed out on the road. The Athletic had a good article about this recently, and there was a recruiting assistant who was saying that he lives around the corner from his local high school, but can't even take his kid to the games on Friday nights because it could be considered a potential recruiting violation by the NCAA.

I'm not saying let everyone who works for the athletic dept to go out and recruit, that would bombard the recruits themselves. But allow the school to designate maybe 3 or 4 recruiting staff members who have full recruiting privileges. This would take some of the stress off of the assistant coaches and even the head coach, splitting the workload across more people.

2. Get rid of the December early signing day.

If there was ever a prime example of unintended consequences, it's the early signing day in college football. The purpose was for guys who have been longtime commits, to be able to go ahead and sign, and get the process over. This benefits the coach he is committed to, as the coach no longer has to spend time recruiting that player to make sure he stays in the fold, and benefits the player because now he doesn't have coaches blowing up his phone anymore trying to get him to change his mind. Then all the rest of the recruits would still continue to be recruited into February. Win-win, right? Not so much.

Early signing day has essentially become THE de facto signing day. National Signing Day in February is an afterthought. As an example, UGA ended up with the top class in the country, and their entire activity on NSD in February consisted of getting a kid who will be a preferred walk-on. If you don't lock up your recruits on the early signing day in December, somebody else will.

Why is this bad? Because December is absolutely brutal for trying to manage a college football program. Assistant coaches are coming and going. The transfer portal window opens. Early signing day is happening. You're signing all these kids and don't even know yet who you're gonna be gaining or losing in the portal. You're trying to interview to replace assistant coaches who have left. You're trying to keep your players from jumping in the portal. Oh, and somewhere in there you might want to find some time to get your team ready for their bowl/playoff game.

At the very least, getting rid of that early signing day would take one major stress point off the coaches. It's also been suggested to make it a VERY early signing day, like move it to July or August, where it's more likely to function as it was intended. That's not a terrible idea either, but I say, just go back to having NSD in February. MAKE NATIONAL SIGNING DAY GREAT AGAIN!

3. Shorten that December transfer portal window.

I stole this one from Barrett Sallee on his Smothered & Covered Podcast. At first I didn't like the idea, but the more I thought about it, the more I like it. His proposal is, open the portal the day after Championship Saturday (the day after all the conference championship games). Then, the portal stays open for exactly one week, that's it (exceptions would have to be made for Army/Navy, who play a week later). In this scenario, the portal would open and close before the first bowl game is even played. No more limbo of who is available and who isn't. This one might be harder to pull off, because the trend has been towards more flexibility of player movement, not less. But most players know by the end of the season whether they see a future at their current program or not. There really isn't a reason for the window to extend all the way into January. Obviously, the 30 day window for programs whose coaches leave would still stay in effect.

These moves wouldn't solve every issue with the calendar, but would sure help. Let me know in the comments what ideas you have.

-Rev

Reverend Whitewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18354346827315621149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6685700054485941236.post-27442152234621513862024-02-18T10:30:00.002-05:002024-02-18T10:30:00.125-05:00Men At Work

This afternoon I'm going to be playing around with the look of the site.

As I explained in our re-introductory post, we ran this blog from like 2011-2014, and it sat dormant for 9.5 years after that. I've tried to clean up this format as much as I can, but it's a theme that was applied a decade ago, and just doesn't work particularly well. I especially don't like some of the mobile formatting, including how all the comments are appearing as white text which is hard to read, and I can't figure out how to change it using this theme.

So I'm gonna try some more contemporary themes this afternoon/evening, that hopefully will display and function cleaner. If I can't get it to work how I want, I may end up moving the blog to Wordpress (If I go this route, there will be a redirect so you can still find it from the current web address).

But if you are visiting this site and things look a little wonky, just give it some time, hopefully it won't take me long to straighten out. It's worth reading the whole thing, but I'll hit a few highlights here.

-Sankey is clearly not a fan that the two remaining members of the PAC 12 won't just go away quietly:

The reality is that we have to have a postseason system that adapts. I am not at all a fan of continuing requests from different corners for special accommodation. We have not asked for special accommodation to this point. We’ll see. It’s at the board level. It’s not to the commissioners. We’ve stated previously a view as a group. It wasn’t unanimous. But at some point, we’re going to have to adapt for the next two years. Then, we’re going to have to re-think our approach to how governance is conducted and how decisions are made if it is to work.

Sure, it makes everyone's job harder, but anyone who expected Washington St and Oregon St to go down without a fight was very shortsighted. Not that this should be a surprise, "shortsighted" can describe most of what the NCAA and schools have done the last 10 years or so.

-On why coaches are leaving in droves for the NFL, and why everything is the fault of the states and courts, not the shortsighted plans of the schools and conferences:

Others (who have retired) have likely been direct about the environment in college sports. I’ve spoken before these recent changes, well before to say: “OK, states, you’ve unleashed NIL activity. We now have courts weighing in on transfer policies. We should also be concerned we’re going to lose really effective leaders, good people, from the coaching profession.” And I think that’s a continuing concern that people look and say: “I just don’t know if I want to work in this environment. I’m going to go find another opportunity.”

I don’t know if that’s great for college sports.

Ya think??? And yeah, those states and courts putting an end to decades of antitrust activity is a real pisser. Nevermind that schools could have gotten ahead of this 10-15 years ago, but nobody wanted to share their golden eggs.

-Finally, something literally no fan wants to hear:

On whether CFP games will be streamed (and behind a paywall) like the NFL playoffs:

That’s part of the “work still to be done.” Embedded in that is, certainly with all of the new players in the environment, that new media opportunity has been part of the consideration.

Ugh. I'll let SimpleMan get on his soapbox about this one, he sent out a text about this just maybe a week ago or so.

There's a lot to unpack in the interview........he also touches on Saban, scheduling, separating football from the other sports, give it a read.

What are your takeaways?

Reverend Whitewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18354346827315621149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6685700054485941236.post-61401710454466161252024-02-18T08:00:00.001-05:002024-02-18T08:00:00.125-05:00Sark Enterprises, Inc

Details of Steve Sarkisian's new contract, via the UT System Board of Regents meeting agenda for Feb. 21-22. pic.twitter.com/poQ18YWZm0
— Inside Texas (@InsideTexas) February 17, 2024

After finally making "Texas is back" come true, everyone's favorite booger eater has joined the $10 million/yr club. McClendon was actually one of the ones I was a little worried might be interested in the GA State vacancy, but there's no doubt that right now an assistant coaching position in the NFL is better than being head coach at a school at GSU's level. He will make more money with far less stress and responsibility.

The calendar has to be fixed in college football, and soon. I'll have a post up tomorrow with more thoughts on that topic.

We know Kirby will find a quality replacement. We also know that Ward has said multiple times in the past that if Kirby wants him to come back to UGA to coach, all he has to do is call. Ward didn't have much coaching experience at the time, but since then has coached with 2 NFL teams, Florida Atlantic, and was a head coach in the XFL. And I can't think of a more worthy replacement on the recruiting trail, where you would think Hines would be a force.

Regardless though, In Kirby we Trust. My guess is he already has a plan in place, and we'll find out pretty soon.

-Rev

*****UPDATE*****

Add Cadillac to the list of names jumping to the NFL. In fairness to Kliavkoff, Scott left him as bad a hand as anyone could. Still Kliavkoff didn't do himself any favors. The conference has until 2026 to grow to at least 8 members to remain a viable entity.

- EA Sports has released the trailer for College Football 25. I haven't owned a gaming console since the PS2, but this might be what makes me finally buy another one.

- The ACC and FSU continue to squabble.

- Penn State is batting around the idea of naming the field at Beaver Stadium after Joe Paterno. As you can imagine, this one brings a lot of opinions with it.

- Dino Babers has landed at Arizona as OC. At one time he was considered a pretty innovative offensive mind. We'll see if he can resurrect that after his time at Syracuse didn't end so innovatively.

- We are getting closer to having radio communications in the QB's helmets. This seems like a no brainer that should have happened a long time ago.

- With all the movement, some bowls that had Pac-12 tie ins are looking to continue those tie ins with former Pac-12 members, at least for a few years. Once upon a time, this would have been big news. Now I'm not sure I can tell you the tie-ins for more than a handful of the bowls.

-Rev

Reverend Whitewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18354346827315621149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6685700054485941236.post-77446754032153960732024-02-16T07:20:00.003-05:002024-02-16T15:32:43.601-05:00Familiar Faces, New Problems

Georgia State has postponed spring practice and its spring game because head coach Shawn Elliott resigned to become the tight ends coach at South Carolina two days into spring practices at GSU.

Never seen anything like this before.
— Brandon Marcello (@bmarcello) February 15, 2024

One of the trends we've seen recently, besides coaches leaving in droves for the NFL, is head coaches at smaller schools leaving to take assistant roles at larger schools. In a classic case of the haves and have nots, coaches can make as much or more money as an assistant at a P4 school than they can as head coach at their smaller programs.

The latest example is Shawn Elliott, who is leaving GA State to take the tight ends coach role at South Carolina. You may remember Elliott, he was a longtime assistant at South Carolina and took over as interim when Spurrier quit on them. He actually had performed decently well at GA State, they went to bowl games 5 out of his 7 seasons there, but I guess he eventually decided that if he can make the same $800k while only worrying about position coaching responsibilities, why have to worry about a whole program for the same money?

The timing is less than ideal though. GSU had actually started their spring practice earlier this week - which has now been postponed. It's crazy that the coaching carousel is still spinning in mid February. You'd think GSU is gonna be looking for somebody with strong recruiting ties in the local area - will be interesting to see if any current UGA coaches' names start popping up.

-Rev

*****UPDATE*****

The school has named their Strength & Conditioning coach as interim head coach. On the one hand, that's a bit of an odd move. On the other, they always say that the S&C coach usually has the best pulse of the team. Not a bad idea if you're just trying to hold the roster together until a new head coach is named.

Reverend Whitewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18354346827315621149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6685700054485941236.post-40368878904744926012024-02-15T11:43:00.008-05:002024-02-15T12:33:52.537-05:00Truth in jokes
Who needs kickers?

No matter the issue, I always like to take a step back, remove my personal bias, and logically think about the facts. This obviously lends itself into the world of politics or religion often but way more importantly, sports rule(s) changes. After watching hockey and soccer for years, I had the "blue card" idea years ago, just saying.

When I first heard the clip of Larry David telling Rich Eisen that if he were football commissioner for a day, he would get rid of kicking, I of course laughed at the delivery and premise. Then, I actually thought about how it is a bit ridiculous to have a player with a skill set that is otherwise unrelated to the rest of the players and game have such a high percentage of per play impact. Yes, you can argue that a Closer or DH/PH in baseball or a soccer/hockey goalie are specialized positions but neither comes out to do something that isn't part of the regular game.

Basketball has too many points scored for an analogy but you could come up with something in soccer or hockey. Let's say that after a goal, any player can come out and throw a puck/ball into a trash can in the corner for an extra goal OR even better, when the team doesn't like the chances of scoring a regular goal, they can stop play and again, shoot by hand at the trash can in the corner for half a point. It takes equal parts imagination and skill to picture football without kicking. Yes, it would be weird as hell but kicking is as arbitrary as saying a TD is equal to 6 points and a safety equals 2.

I haven't done any research to determine how many games are decided by extra points and field goals made or missed, or what the average kickoff or punt nets but I bet if you came up with some new rules and removed kickers, that in 5 years, people would not care. First 1-2 years, everyone will lose it but then you settle in and adjust like we do to all the rules. The kickoff rules have been tweaked for years but let's walk through a thought experiment on the fly. Remember I haven't spent much time on this but I imagine if a bunch of people smarter than me work on it for any time, they could come up with some clever options. Edit - I did google punts and we're basically talking about less than 10 per game total and often way less for averages around 40-50 yards across college and NFL.

**Note - my first change is that a custom coin is made each game with each team on a side. That way no one has to call the flip or have any confusion and you sell the coin after the game for charity. Who wouldn't want the coin from the UGA-BAMA or UGA-TCU natty's. Whoever wants to start that coin company, remember I said it first and will accept a small percentage of the company.

Kickoffs
Receiving offense can choose after the Defending team declines #1 below:

Defending team can choose to start with ball on their own 10, with a 4th and 15 (onside kick rule)

Start on the 20 with a 1st and 10

Start on the 30 with a 2nd and 10

Start on the 40 with a 3rd and 10

Start on the 50 with a 4th and 10

Remove or adjust any of the above but no physical kick will happen. This entire process will eliminate "special teams" and create more player positions (really only a NFL issue).

Punts
There are so many options here but I like the idea of giving each team a certain number of "yards" they choose per game and I would lean towards letting the punting team choose but hey, maybe you let the receiving team choose. Remember you also have no FG so you might have a need for some shorter yards. Maybe:

2 - 30 yard punts

2 - 35 yard punts

2 - 40 yard punts

2 - 45 yard punts

1 - 50 yard punt

Once you use all these (looking at you Iowa), all your "punts" are only 25 yards. Think about that. We're creating more offense already.

FGs - arguably the hardest one to solve but let's take a crack at it. My solution actually involves changes to the penalty yards. Without the bailout of kicks all the time, we need to reconsider how punitive penalties are. Offense holding is changed to 5 yards now and should be called more often. There should be an adjustment to include severity as well. We used to have 5 and 15 yard personal foul (facemask) penalties and we need at least 2 levels again which we can steal from kicking since we no longer need the running or roughing the punter fouls. Not every horse collar or facemask penalties are created equally. Automatic first downs and offensive and defensive PI need a rework but can we at least all agree that if it's 4th and 30 and a downfield holding call is made on a DB, maybe that 5 yard penalty doesn't include an automatic 1st [Soapbox issue for me]. Once you're able to keep 99% of downs to reasonable, every 4th is either a go for it or "punt". Reasonable is not a sack, holding penalty, false start, sugar huddle for -2, and draw play for 6 making it 4th and 23 from the 34. This is where a 51 yard FG would have been the play but now, you probably use a 30 yard punt or maybe go for it if situation calls for it. If you think that sounds crazy, imagine the end of Bama-Auburn this year. The FG was not an option and stupidity ensued.

Extra Points - the easiest one to solve without question

Pick a yardage to count for a point, probably the 2

Pick another yardage to count for 2 points, maybe the 4 or 5

If you want to get crazy, maybe add in a 3 pointer from the 10

Before dismissing, really think about how the game would look and if you think it would dramatically change. One final change would be that a safety should be worth a lot more, at least 4 and possibly 5 points. They rarely happen and are one of the most exciting plays when they do.

SimpleMan98http://www.blogger.com/profile/09639455013202766941noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6685700054485941236.post-15624053549541748252024-02-15T06:42:00.003-05:002024-02-15T16:16:56.939-05:00Bang For Your Buck
UGA signed the #1 recruiting class in the country this cycle, and boy it's a good thing we did, considering we spent $5.3 million to do it:

The Georgia Bulldogs spent $5.3 million dollars on recruiting throughout the 2023 fiscal year (from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023). Georgia’s lavish recruiting spending did pay off as the Bulldogs recently signed the No. 1 class of 2024 in the country.

Georgia spent more on recruiting than Michigan and Ohio State combined during the 2023 fiscal year. The Wolverines and Buckeyes totaled $4.0 million in recruiting expenses combined.

Michigan isn't known to be super aggressive in recruiting, Harbaugh seemed to take more of a "find the right guys and develop them" approach, but Ohio State consistently recruits at the same level as UGA for far less money. I'm not saying that as a criticism, just an observation. One thing is for certain, not that we didn't already know, but Kirby is an absolute maniac when it comes to recruiting. As long as the on field results continue to be there, nobody is gonna complain.

The opposite of "bang for your buck"? Obviously there were extenuating circumstances, but Texas A&M spent $4 million to end up with the #19 class in the country. Oof.

Clemson spent $3.5 million to end up at #11, but Clemson is an odd bird. Historically speaking under Dabo, their classes that end up in the 11-15 range tend to pan out better than top 5 or 6 classes. Of course, it also helps when those classes have a generational QB in them, and this class does not have one of those, so we'll see if Dabo is back on track or not.

- Rev
Reverend Whitewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18354346827315621149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6685700054485941236.post-91385906100786157842024-02-14T19:00:00.004-05:002024-02-15T14:18:29.199-05:00So.....who are we, anyway?

Just a quick background on this blog.

The three of us (and a silent 4th who hates all things techonology and social media) all went to UGA together back in the Donnan era, and have remained tight ever since. To this day we have a group chat that sees activity every single day. We don't see each other in person very often, but these guys are the ones I'd literally do anything for. Friendships that last this long are a treasure.

We started this blog back in 2011, in the heyday of the blogosphere, it seemed there was a new UGA blog popping up every week. We had some marginal success, but then life got in the way on a couple of fronts, and we lost steam. The name of the blog came from the one time that Richt said something that just really rubbed the fanbase wrong - The same issues were popping up over and over, criticism was building, and Richt made a comment referencing the fact that most of the people who were complaining had "never been in the arena". Which, was true, but didn't change the fact that most of the gripes at the time were legit. So the blog name is a reference back to that.

My username, Reverend Whitewall, is just a longtime joke in our friend group. I had to get some tires replaced back when we were in college and the place put them on with the whitewalls on the outside. I had to leave before they could fix them, so I drove around with whitewall tires for 2-3 days before I could get them flipped somewhere. I was pretty active in one of the student ministries on campus at the time, and LC (he's a nickname guy) made some joke about "ol' Reverend Whitewall over there" or something like that, and it stuck. Other than that, I'm just a normal 46 year old dude trying to figure out what he wants to be when he grows up.

SimpleMan98 is a mover and shaker in the financial services industry. And by that, I mean he works for some big financial services company doing something. I really don't know what he does. But he had a class with Kirby when we were in Athens, so he is objectively cooler than the rest of us. He and I have been friends since we were 12, met on the soccer field and have been buds ever since.

LCUGA has managed to achieve the American Dream of climbing his way to middle management at his company. He's tall, loud, outspoken, and will keep you laughing......sometimes with him, often times at him, but he really couldn't care less. On the one hand, he has regal tastes - he is a Jack Daniels Tennessee Squire (yes that’s a real thing) with a discerning taste for fine whiskey. On the other hand, he is a lifelong avid Atlanta Hawks fan, so do with that what you will. I like to describe him as the "most" of our friend group. That pretty much sums him up.

Reeder 3:16 is the silent member of our group. We don't talk much about him, and things are best left that way. He's been angrily shaking his fist at passing clouds since we were like 21 years old.

In other words, we're just a bunch of regular dudes who love UGA and college football. We don't have a bunch of inside contacts, we're never gonna be breaking any kind of news here, we don't know the latest scoop on the latest and greatest recruit, etc. LC has some west Georgia connections that he hears rumblings about UGA, AU, and Bama sometimes, but we usually don't spread those things too far outside of our friend group. For the most part, we're no different than you are.

Mostly we're just here to give our take on things, engage in some friendly banter, and hopefully build a community. Thanks for reading, I hope you'll join us for the ride.

-Rev
Reverend Whitewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18354346827315621149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6685700054485941236.post-52124738217253590982024-02-14T18:22:00.004-05:002024-02-15T11:17:51.458-05:00Staff Changes
As you have probably already heard by now, Scott Cochran is no longer with the team.

I'm sure more details will come out later, but we know he's had his demons to battle, and I hope this is a good move for him.

Shortly after that, it was announced that Darrell Dickey is leaving as well. Dickey, if you'll recall, was brought in as an analyst as one of the replacements when Bobo was promoted and Buster Faulkner left to take the OC role at Tech. Dickey was an experienced sounding board for Bobo to bounce ideas off, but I'm sure there will be no shortage of guys lining up to take that spot.

Obviously things can still happen, but overall, staff turnover looks to be minimal this year. Hopefully Kirk Benedict, who has been promoted to Cochran's old position, will be able to continue the success we've had on special teams.

Reverend Whitewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18354346827315621149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6685700054485941236.post-31024769618388519142024-02-14T11:18:00.002-05:002024-02-15T08:05:55.645-05:00How do you replace a Legend?

The simple answer is, you don’t.

We found out last week that the greatest of UGA bloggers, and one of the best in all of college football, passed away. Senator Blutarsky did it at a level for 17 years that I can’t even begin to comprehend. The picture above is me on the left, the good Senator on the right, at a meet up before the 2014 Clemson game (yes, I drink wine at tailgates, somebody has to bring a little class to the operation!). I rarely use the “favorite” tag in my photo gallery. In fact, I have exactly 7 pictures favorited, and this is 1 of those 7. That should tell you the level of respect and admiration I had for Bluto. I told my buddies the other day, we were just a shade too young to have truly appreciated Lewis Grizzard - he passed away my junior year of high school. But I think for a lot of people, Bluto had become our Grizzard. And I can’t think of a higher compliment to pay someone who wrote about UGA football.

I had been having an itch for about a year to revive this blog, and Bluto’s passing was what gave me the final shove. I don’t know yet if LCUGA and SimpleMan98 will be joining me in the revival, but I’m sure they will chime in from time to time.

I can promise you one thing, and that is that this blog will not be as good as what Bluto had. I don’t know how he did it, and I certainly don’t have the ability with my job to be posting multiple times a day, every day. However, I will try to have at least one post a day. I have some ideas of some things I’d like to do especially in the off-season, but we will see where that goes. I’m hoping that at a minimum, LC will bring back his Friday Follies which were well received when we were doing this blog before, and SimpleMan will still chime in with his grumpy views when so inspired.

And again, this is not a replacement for GTP. It will have a different vibe. You can scroll back on our old posts and see we incorporated things from our personal lives as well (Bluto was very private), and would post questions to the blog looking for advice about things we were considering buying, things like that. Of course it will be 95% college football, but we like some variety. We never got big enough to have to worry about decorum in the comments section, but obviously it will be monitored.

Anyway, would love to have you as a regular visitor. If you have an idea for a post or series of posts about a topic you think hasn’t been explored enough, let me know, I’m certainly open to having other contributors or guest contributors. The more activity, the better.

I’m sure other blogs will be springing up as well. Morris Day has already set up a site for GTP refugees here. Maybe somebody has the keys to the kingdom at GTP and will be able to continue that blog. There’s definitely a huge void in the Dawgosphere that’s gonna take a village to fill.

In the meantime, keep coming back, and let’s see where this goes.

-Rev
Reverend Whitewallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18354346827315621149noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6685700054485941236.post-84115835194964058732014-08-04T16:55:00.002-04:002014-08-04T16:58:02.345-04:00More Colorado 14ers....waiting on football seasonHere's a few more trip reports, one from late last summer and the first one done this year, putting me at 18 of the the Colorado 14ers and still almost 30 more out there to climb.

I’ve mostly been in favor of adding a SEC game and getting rid of one
of the “garbage” games. The usual argument
is that a 9 game SEC schedule is too tough and would basically do away with big
out of conference games like Clemson due to potential lost revenue. The idea being that the more home and home
series you agree to, the more home games and revenue you’re losing each
year. Also, the simple fact today is
that if you’re in the SEC right now, you don’t need quality out of conference
opponents to sway voters or computers at the end of the year. This may not always be the case however, ask
Auburn. Scheduling is especially tough
for teams like Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina where we all have perennial
in-state out of conference rivals. We
all get tired of beating up on Tech every year and would rather see a Ohio
State, Oregon, or Texas but we’d all miss our little brother if he went
away.

It wasn’t that long ago that a season only had 11 regular season games,
so it shouldn’t be that hard to figure out.
1 more game in a season = 1 more conference game. The problem is always money, now that the Universities
have seen the extra cash 1 more home game brings in, they aren’t willing to do
away with it just to appease the fans with a more competitive schedule. It
does seem crazy that we’ll play Clemson and Tech more often than some teams in
our own conference but that’s the world we live it. There is one benefit to keeping the 8 game
schedule, I like the fact that the chances are smaller of seeing the same team
in the SEC championship game that you’ve already played during the season. Actually surprised that we’ve never had to
play Auburn twice in less than month. Doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen anytime
in the near future either with what our western rivals are trying to pass off as a football program. Done with the tough preseason trash talk, time to focus.

My family went on an Alaskan Cruise in mid June. Left from Seattle with stops in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria (Canada) and a ride through the Tracy Arm fjord to see the Sawyer Glacier. The best videos of the whales are too large for the blog, so I'm only posting a small sample.

Overall, I am satisfied with this class. I understand why some people are complaining, we definitely missed out on more of the top in-state talent this year than usual, but I can honestly say the only prospect I'm really bummed about losing was Tunsil (who wasn't even an in-state prospect). I think that was a huge loss, he seems like as close to a sure-fire prospect as you can get, as long as he stays healthy, and there just aren't too many of those elite-level tackles out there. So when you have the chance to get one, it hurts to lose them.

Don't get me wrong, I would have LOVED to land Kamara and/or Adams as well, but losing them doesn't strike me as being as big a loss as Tunsil. Of course, if we end up with a stretch next year where both Gurley and Marshall are injured, I will be singing a different tune. But, we still got 32 guys and like most other things in life, recruiting is largely a numbers game, so hopefully we get a fair amount of future star players out of this class.

The Grantham news will be interesting to follow. If he really did get on the phone with Davin Bellamy and assure Bellamy that he would be staying, it would look terrible to do a 180. My gut tells me that Grantham fully intends on staying, but may go do an interview or two to test out what his market value is for future/current negotiations. But.............we'll see.

I know, I know, signing day is tomorrow and nobody is thinking about soccer. But since there seems to be very little (good) news for recruits making their decisions tomorrow on the UGA front, this caught my eye.

Richard Deitsch over at Sports Illustrated has an article up today saying that Fox is grooming Gus Johnson to be the voice of soccer in the US for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Now I like Gus, I know some people think he's over the top but I actually find him to be pretty entertaining. I was suspicious about his move to college football but I think he has handled the move pretty well. And if there is an American voice out there that could match the energy of a "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!" call like we hear from the Latin American/South American leagues, Gus is certainly the guy.

But really, I just don't think ANY American voice should be "the" voice for coverage in the US. It's a tried and true method............hire one guy with a British accent, another guy with a Scottish accent, and let them call the games. Whether discussing the condition of the "pitch", the "lovely" touch on a through ball, a "magical" effort, or whatever other soccer lingo, it just sounds so right with an accent from the United Kingdom, and so wrong with an accent from the United States. Studio analysts are a different story, I enjoy Wynalda, Lalas, etc with their halftime and pregame stuff, but the guys calling the game need to speak properly, and in this case properly wasn't born/raised in the US.

Am I right?

(Also, going back to signing day, hopefully we pick up one or two more, but I'm still excited about this signing class. Tunsil is a huge loss, he would have been great to have the next 3 or 4 years, but other than that it's a great class that addresses our needs).
I thought it was bad when Clowney tossed Murray around like a rag doll last year, but this was as powerful a hit as you'll ever see.

As LC just said, if Murray decides to go ahead and turn pro, I kinda understand.

When this matchup was announced, I felt really good about it. I've only seen Nebraska play here and there this year, but with both sides of the ball starting to click for us in the second half of the season, it seemed like we were in good shape. But losing Jenkins for this game has me really worried. Even though the conditioning has clearly been better this year, there have definitely been a couple of times where it seemed like our defensive front wore down late in the game. Obviously the SECCG jumps to mind, but even the Florida game jumps to my mind as well...........Florida had actually driven the ball down the field pretty easily on us on that last drive, we were just fortunate that Jarvis was able to get in there and make a great play to knock the ball loose at the goal line. But we were getting no push from the line at the end.

So, for me, I'd love to see us come out and jump on them early. If we can put 21 points on the board by the early part of the 2nd quarter without giving up much, I like us going away. But if it is still close going into the 4th quarter, we're gonna have a mess on our hands, and it will probably be up to the offense to win the game for us (this is the scenario I think is more likely). I think they'll be able to move the ball on our defense, but I'm banking on our defense being opportunistic and making 2 or 3 big plays to give us a couple of extra possessions in the game and hopefully close the game out at the end.

I'm going to say we win 38-31, with Jarvis making the biggest opportunistic play of the day, a sack on the game's final play to (A) seal the victory and (B) break Pollack's record. How fitting of an ending would that be to his UGA career?

This game is very big for the perception of UGA nationally. Lose to Nebraska after the way they got blown out against Wisconsin, and all the doubters in the media are going to be right back where they were after the SC game. The UF victory and playing 'Bama to a near standstill have pushed us in the right direction, now it's time to build on that with a solid out of conference victory.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. And GO DAWGS!

Looking through both the team and individual stats, the only thing that sticks out is just how mediocre we are statistically speaking.

I think this speaks to our inconsistency in all phases. The big spikes in each direction throughout the season create average numbers. There's no doubt that if we ever put it all together in a complete game, we can dominate good teams and be an elite team.

One truth that is concerning is that the offense played poorly in the 2 games against borderline great defenses generating well under 300 yards of total offense in both games. Assuming we take care of business this weekend, we'll see the best defense in the country and the only chance we have of winning that game is for the offense to play better. The defense has been inconsistent too this year but they've shown the capability to shut down good teams at times over recent years. It's been a while since the offense exploded against a great defense. I'm not saying we have to score 30 on Bama to win but Aaron can't have multiple turnovers and we have to convert some 3rd downs.

Very happy to be playing such meaningful games this late in the season but still humbled by the beating we took in Columbia. Remember that was only 4 games ago. 3 games ago the defense gave up 200 yards of rushing and 24 points to a team ranked over a 100 nationally in all offensive categories, didn't score against Vanderbilt or Florida, lost by 42 to Arkansas, and got beat by Western Kentucky. We're in a great position considering how we've played at times this year. Let's hope this team is starting to get everything cooking at the right time like last year's NY Giants or the Packers from 2 years ago.
After the Cocks deflowered us on prime time TV last week, I will freely admit I had no interest in backing into the SECCG. (I also had a lot of other strong feelings about the program, but we won't get into that now.)
Last night was a very sobering reminder that we aren't (or simply haven't shown that we are) on SC's level based on how tough they looked vs. LSU. That was a helluva game no matter who you were pulling for, but the SC loss obviously benefits us.
I honestly don't think UF can beat SC, but it is in The Swamp and it is SC. I don't expect it, but it wouldn't surprise me, either.

Having said all that, if the Gators win and we beat them, are you just as fired up to get to face either Bama or LSU in the SECCG or are you still on the "we didn't earn it" side of the fence?

What will change my outlook is if we throttle UK (and look nasty and pissed off doing so) and then play extremely well vs. UF.
If we look shaky vs. UF, that will give me pause.
Comment on it if you so desire:

That looked like a Jim Donnan-coached team Saturday night. All the talent in the world. Had feasted on lesser or equal competition up to that game and completely got embarrassed and dominated on a national stage.

I guess we'll see how or if they rebound from here.
A lot was at stake.
A lot might be lost.
Fan devotion was tested.

We'll see what happens.
Feelings for this game are running the gamut across Bulldog Nation: nervous, excited, confident, flatulent, optimistic, etc.

Me? I'm nervous. I don't doubt our ability to show up and man up. I don't doubt our ability to score on them. I don't doubt our ability to stop them in certain situations.
Yet, I'm nervous. It's a good nervous like I know we're capable of beating them and damn sure might, as opposed to the taco fart nervous.

I'm concerned about special teams, costly TOs and protecting Murray. That's it.

Rev thinks we're 2 TDs better than them and isn't afraid to say it while wearing his Clemson ernge.

Simple Man is nervous, but still thinks we'll win (not to mention that he'll be there live and in person).

Faithful reader Reeder 3:16 has already beat his wife and kicked his dog just out of pure angst.
